Lama Zopa Rinpoche is a Tibetan Buddhist scholar and meditator who over 30 years has supervised the spiritual activities of the extensive worldwide network of centers, projects and services that make up the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) that he founded with Lama Thubten Yeshe.
Lama Zopa Rinpoche was born in 1946, in Solu Khumbu (Nepal) and was recognized at the age of 3 as the reincarnation of the Lama of Lawudo, a great meditator of his region. Rinpoche was ordained as a monk and was educated in monasteries in Nepal and Tibet.
In 1959, after the Chinese occupation, he escaped to India and continued his studies in the refugee camp of Buxa Duar. Soon after, he became the main disciple of Lama Yeshe and accompanied him on his trips and during his courses.

In 1970, Rinpoche taught his first meditation course for Westerners at Kopan monastery, near Kathmandu (Nepal), founded by Lama Yeshe and himself.

Invited to the West by their growing number of students, the two lamas dedicated their time to teach regularly throughout the world. Upon the passing of Lama Yeshe, in 1984, Rinpoche took over the spiritual direction of the FPMT.

Lama Zopa usually visits the centers that the FPMT has in Asia, Europe, America, Australia and New Zealand, to teach and guide his many disciples. Rinpoche is the perfect living example of his teachings, as he shows all the qualities of an altruistic mind in his tireless and compassionate work for others.

"The most happy thing in my life, most fulfilling thing is to work for and to benefit sentient beings.
Even just the mere thought to cause happiness to sentient beings, to benefit them, to free them from suffering is the best offering to all the buddhas and bodhisattvas. This is the best offering, the best puja; this is what pleases their holy mind most."
